Paul Kenneth Calaway, born March 31, 1910, in Bethesda, Arkansas, was director of the Georgia Tech EES from 1954 to 1957.
Calaway received his bachelor of arts from Arkansas College, his master of science from Georgia Tech in 1933, and his Ph.D. from the University of Texas. After receiving his doctorate, he returned to Georgia Tech to teach chemistry and worked to develop replacements for anti-malarial drug quinine.
Sigma Xi Pioneer
While an associate professor of chemistry, he won Georgia Tech's inaugural Sigma Xi Research Prize for the paper "Tolymercaptopropanones and Their Condensation with Isatins" in 1947, which was published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society in January 1947.
Following serving as EES director, Calaway returned to teaching. He died at the age of 83 on October 31, 1993.
